Why did you start writing children’s stories? And why in rhyme?
Seeing the world through the eyes of our grandchildren was my inspiration. My children’s stories build on the scientific writing I’ve done most of my life. They are fantasy laced with facts intended to be fun and thought provoking. I think stories in verse are more fun to read, albeit more challenging to write.
How did you pick the theme for Maggie’s Magic Map series?
Adventures with remarkable members of our animal kingdom are fun, instructive and offer children a different perspective on their own lives.
Tell us about your books coming in 2023.
My new series deals with universal childhood experiences, such as loosing baby teeth, learning to draw and being told by their parents to eat their vegetables. Just as with the Magic Map Series, they are written in verse and designed to make children smile and think.
Tell us about your illustrators and collaborators.
My illustrators bring the stories to life through their energy, imagination and creativity. You can learn more about them on this website. I also want to acknowledge Lin Fan (en.nunuodesign.com), who lives in Shanghai and helped create this website, as well as my family and grandchildren for their interest, support and always honest feedback. I’d also like acknowledge our son Brent, who is my “go to guy’ when I need help with phrasing, rhyming and punctuation – which I do a lot!
